Homework 1

  1. Do this sometime before the weekend! Its easy.Think of a password. Got it? Write it down somewhere. Now email it to me (jonah AT feedtank DOT com). You will be using this password zip up files when handing them in as well as retrieving grades. When I recieve this email from you, I will set up your blog and email you how to set it up.
  2. BUY THE BOOK! Order from amazon here.
  3. Download and install GameMaker from this site, and install it on the computer you will be working on (either your own on in the lab).
  4. Come up with a story for a game. The story can be very simple but should consist of some conflict that needs to be resolved. With this story in mind, draw some simple sprites in photoshop that will be characters in your story. Using GameMaker and what we learned in class, import your graphics as sprites, create objects out of them and place them in a GameMaker room. Make it so that your main character that can be controlled by the keyboard. No other interactions need to be implemented.

You will be turning in the GameMaker file as well as a few sentences describing your story.

Be creative! Here are some examples:
    • Xnar the alien has run out of fuel and crashed his ship into a generic suburban parking lot. Xnar soon discovers that old sneakers will fuel his ship. Collect enough old sneakers to get Xnar back home. (You would create: an XNar sprite, a sneaker sprite and a parking lot background...).
    • Millions of years ago, trees ran free. An evil sorcerer jealous of the trees' speed, cast on a spell on all tree which turned theyre legs into roots and rendered them motionless. All that is, except for one... Find the spell that will reverse the sorcers curse a set the trees free! (You would create: an unrooted tree sprite, rooted tree sprites, a forest background... ).
