Homework 2

  1. LAB 2. Complete if you didn't finish in class. Here.
  2. WEBSITE. If you haven't already, create a website where all your work for this class will reside. This must be emailed ALL LABS AND ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE POSTED TO YOUR SITE BEFORE CLASS IN ORDER TO GET CREDIT. Please don't go to crazy making this site, just links and text is fine. No Flash.
  3. READING. Read pages 28-55 in Rules of Play. This will cover sections on: Meaningful Play, Design (signs and semiotics) and Systems.
  4. PRESENTATION. For next week, create a short presentation on your website covering each section you read in Rules of Play. I want you to illustrate concepts discussed in the reading with concrete examples in video games you've played. You may choose from games you've played before or ones we've gone over in class. (Preferably they can be played online, so you can link to them and provide screenshots.) Provide text (your own words), links and screenshots of how these concepts are illustrated in games you've chosen. You will present your examples in class next week. Choose at least two concepts from each section. Examples of concepts to illustrate: the descriptive definition of meaningful play, the evaluative definition of meaningful play, discernabile, integrated, signs, meaning that results from signs, how context shapes interpretation, objects, attributes, internal relationships, environment formal, experiential and cultural framings, open systems, closed systems...
